This year’s STU Cares Day of Action gave STUdents the opportunity to connect with organizations across Fredericton and learn more about the work happening in their community.

STUdents volunteered with organizations including:

  •
  •
  •

STUdent: Grace Lapointe / Volunteer Location: NB Community Harvest Gardens

At the NB Community Harvest Gardens, fourth-year STUdent Grace Lapointe helped clear grass surrounding the farm’s fencing while learning more about the farm and its role in the community.

“My highlights were the amount of care and conscientiousness that the individuals at the farm had not only for the community of Fredericton, but especially for the animals,” she said.

The experience connected with her studies and passion for human rights.

“I’ve always had this urge to be better and to do better. This experience showed me that STU was the right place for me to create change within the community, especially as a student with a love for human rights.”

STUdent: Sawyer Holmes / Volunteer Location: Lily’s Animal Sanctuary

Second-year STUdent Sawyer Holmes spent the day at Lily’s Animal Sanctuary, clearing a forested path to make it more accessible for animals with injured feet and legs.

“I learned that there are so many opportunities in the Fredericton area for students to volunteer and gain experience in different fields. It’s also a great opportunity to meet like-minded students and make new friends,” he said.

STU Cares also contributes to Holmes’s efforts as he works toward completing the Certificate in Experiential Learning and Community Engagement alongside his degree.

“It helps provide a well-rounded education where you learn both inside and outside of the classroom.”

STUdent: Alice Vautour / Volunteer Location: Kent

Third-year STUdent Alice Vautour joined other volunteers at Kent to collect donations and connect with members of the community.

“One of the highlights for me was getting to interact with members of the community and seeing people willing to support a good cause,” she said.

Vautour also appreciated the opportunity to work alongside other STUdents and see everyone come together to contribute their time and effort.

“As a Psychology student, I think connecting with others and understanding the importance of community involvement are valuable experiences.”

STUdent: Caitlyn Steeves / Volunteer Location: John Howard Society

Fourth-year STUdent Caitlyn Steeves joined fellow STUdents at the John Howard Society for a property clean-up.

For her, STU Cares was a chance to apply what she has learned at STU while giving back to the community.

“Even just volunteering a few hours out of your day can make a big difference within the community, especially when several students come together,” she said.

“I encourage all STU students to participate in STU Cares next year!”

About STU Cares

STU Cares Day of Action is organized by STU’s Office of Experiential Learning and Career Development and is supported by the FutureNB initiative. The annual event helps foster a relationship between learning and volunteering, and many of our event partners offer continued volunteering in a more consistent capacity.
