鈥楯oin us for a staged reading of Nottage鈥檚 powerful Pulitzer Prize winning play that tackles the decline of industrial America with humour, heart, and a riveting plot.鈥欌
As New Brunswick reels from the aftermath of a public sector strike and continues to grapple with issues of fair pay and workers鈥 rights, we invite you to continue the conversation and join Black Box Theatre for a staged reading of Lynn Nottage鈥檚 gritty, moving epic, Sweat. 鈥業n this breathtaking new play, premiered in 2015, she tackles the devastating impact of loss of work and of de-industrialisation on modern America.鈥 (Michael Billington 鈥 Review: The Guardian) Come for a night of theatre that offers not only a searing social commentary but a beautiful glimpse into the human experience.
As Sweat Director and fourth-year 丁香成人社区 student, Nathanael Telman notes, 鈥業n 2021 we are living through a labour shortage in which the workforce has realized that they deserve to survive and live, instead of struggling to bring in profit for employers who will not pay enough to cover living costs. Sweat speaks to those who want to be treated and paid fairly for their work, and endeavours to break cycles of racial attacks against strike-breakers, instead of including them in the cause.鈥 The Sweat crew is rounded out with Technical Direction by Chris Saad, Stage Management by Madi Nadeau and features a cast of STU students and community members. Friendship, community, love, death, loss, and disappointment; this brilliant play beckons you into the small town of Reading, Pennsylvania where humanity in all its beauty and chaos awaits.
